SUMMARY:"Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939" @ Speed Art Museum (multiple dates\, March 29-June 22)
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 – JUNE 22\, 2025\n3rd Floor\, North Building\nVenue Curator: Erika Holmquist-Wall \nBuy Tickets \nDuring the early twentieth century\, Paris was the destination of choice for talented and independent American women determined to move beyond the limitations that restricted them at home. Drawn by a strong desire for independence\, they crossed the Atlantic to pursue personal and professional ambitions in a city viewed as the epicenter of modernity. Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939 recaptures the experiences of these unorthodox women who found in Paris the freedom to blaze new trails in a variety of fields\, including art\, literature\, design\, publishing\, music\, fashion\, journalism\, theater\, and dance. As foreigners in a cosmopolitan city\, they escaped the societal expectations and constraints of both the United States and France. Many used their newfound liberty as an opportunity for self-reinvention and discovery. \nPortraiture provides a revealing lens through which to view the cultural shifts American women helped instigate in Paris. Their defiance of social\, professional\, and gender norms rendered conventional modes of female portraiture obsolete. Brilliant Exiles highlights the dynamic role of portraiture in articulating the refashioned sense of self and the new conceptions of modern female identity that resulted from the interventions of American women in Parisian life. \nDespite significant differences in their circumstances\, the women in this exhibition shared many experiences and points of contact. Featuring over 85 artworks across various media and accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue\, Brilliant Exiles visually graphs the social and creative networks and points of intersection that linked these various groups\, with an emphasis on sites of sociability and production that were overseen by women. Through vivid portraits and compelling biographies\, the catalogue and exhibition recover a history that will be unfamiliar to many museum visitors\, revealing the impact that American Women had on modernist Paris\, as well as the city’s transformative effect on these brilliant exiles from the United States. \n  \nThis exhibition has been organized by the National Portrait Gallery and received Federal support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative Pool\, administered by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \n  \n  \n***Description from website

SUMMARY:"1-800-ON-HER-OWN" Ani DiFranco documentary screening @ Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:1-800-ON-HER-OWN\nDirected by Dana Floor \nSaturday\, May 10\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \nSunday\, May 11\, 3 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed and Women in Film-KY members \n“Anti-folk singer-songwriter\, political activist\, feminist icon and LGBTQ+ rights campaigner: it should be surprising that Ani DiFranco has also been a pioneering force in independent music for over three decades.”—Andy Fyfe\, Mojo \nIn the early 90s\, Ani DiFranco crashed onto the music scene as a thundering new voice. Unapologetically bisexual\, political\, and feminist\, Ani became a worldwide phenomenon when she founded the first “woman-run non-corporate queer-happy” label\, Righteous Babe records\, beating the male-dominated music industry at their own game. The press called her “an entrepreneurial wonder” and “the industry’s worst nightmare.” Ani simply called herself a folk singer\, dedicated to art\, activism and staying true to herself\, no matter the cost. \nThe fiery portrait\, 1-800-ON-HER-OWN takes you on a wild cinematic road trip through Ani DiFranco’s punk-folk past to her life today as a passionate activist and groundbreaking indie rock star. Throughout the ride\, she’s brutally honest\, famously foul-mouthed and totally hilarious. Her daily challenges resonate as an enduring\, inspiring musical icon and a relatable contemporary “everywoman” with her own epic fails and hard-won victories. 2024\, U.S.\, DCP\, 77 minutes. Recommended for 16+ \n  \n***Description from Speed website \n  \nFind the trailer here \nWebsite: https://www.anidifranco.film/ \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/anidifrancofilm/ \nTickets: https://www.speedmuseum.org/cinema/1-800-on-her-own/
