SUMMARY:Introduction to Blacksmithing @ Craig Kaviar Forge
DESCRIPTION:Hear the ringing of the anvil. Learn some of the basics of Blacksmithing. In this class the students will learn the proper use of the hammer\, tongs and anvil. \nStudents will have the opportunity to use either a natural gas or coal forge. In this class we will explore basic blacksmithing techniques including tapering\, upsetting\, forging a shape point\, and twisting while we hand forge square nails and J hooks. \nThis class is appropriate for both novices and experienced smiths who want to sharpen their skills. All tools and supplies are provided. \nThe students are expected to provide their own personal safety equipment including eye and hearing protection\, as well as sturdy leather shoes.The class is fully refundable until 8 days before the class starts. SUMMARY:Poetry Slam @ KMAC
DESCRIPTION:Our next Poetry Slam will take place on Saturday\, January 25th\, 5:30-7:30 PM. \n​​KMAC Poetry Slams are one of Louisville’s premiere slam poetry events.\nTaking place on the last Saturday of each month (unless otherwise noted)\, the Slam is a competition amongst local poets and juried by audience members. This event is made possible by the Lance Newman\, a.k.a Mr. SpreadLove\, and Young Poets of Louisville. \nAdmission to the KMAC Poetry Slam is free. \nFor those interested in competing\, please arrive ten minutes early to register with the Slam host\, Lance Newman. There will be a $10 fee for competitors. We recommend having one poem prepared or each of the three rounds. Poems must be no longer than three minutes each. Each poem will be judged on a scale from 0.0 to 10 by five randomly selected audience members. Newman II was raised in Louisville\, Kentucky. \nHe is a writer\, poet\, host\, actor\, performing\, visual and teaching artist. His experience is the culmination of a 16 year career performing around the country. As a playwright\, he helped create plays such as the Smoketown Poetry Opera\, The Westend Poetry Opera \, and The Blood Always Returns. Under the name Mr. SpreadLove\, he teaches his creative writing and public speaking curriculum in schools\, community centers and service providing organizations. He hosts the largest and longest running poetry slam in Louisville\, created the public art “LITS Project” on 4th Street\, and has been featured in newspapers\, commercials and the feature film Frathouse. Newman is better known by the moniker ‘Mr. SpreadLove\,’ a local man of worldly talent
