Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her life and the lives of her children\, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother’s nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Laura also lives in her illusions. \nShe is crippled\, and this defect\, intensified by her mother’s anxiety to see her married\, has driven her more and more into herself. The crux of the action comes when Tom invites a young man of his acquaintance to take dinner with the family. Jim\, the caller\, is a nice ordinary fellow who is at once pounced upon by Amanda as a possible husband for Laura. In spite of her crude and obvious efforts to entrap the young man\, he and Laura manage to get along very nicely\, and momentarily Laura is lifted out of herself into a new world. But this crashes when\, toward the end\, Jim explains that he is already engaged. \nThe world of illusion that Amanda and Laura have striven to create in order to make life bearable collapses about them. Tom\, too\, at the end of his tether\, at last leaves home. \n  \n***Description from website

SUMMARY:Five Films by Phil Solomon @ Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Five Films by Phil Solomon at Speed Cinema\nApril 6 at 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm \n\nLamplightings \nFive Films by Phil Solomon \nSunday\, April 6\, 12:30 pm \nFree\, first come\, first served \n\nA master of the alchemical nature of film\, Phil Solomon’s cinematic works explore both the surface and the depths of the celluloid image. Solomon’s frequent and anarchic use of the optical printer results in films that could only be created\, as well as screened\, with wholly physical elements. Nonetheless\, the filmmaker’s refusal of dogma led him to adopt new forms of visual storytelling over time\, resulting in the unexpected use of footage from the video game series Grand Theft Auto in his later output. \nHaving just recently passed away in 2019\, a survey of Solomon’s work is collected here in a program of five films\, including one of his most beloved works\, The Snowman. 1988-2007\, U.S.\, 16mm and digital\, 64 minutes. Recommended for 13+. \n\nThe Secret Garden \n“The Secret Garden is one of Solomon’s most exquisite films. As with Thornton and Khlar there is the shadow of a story here\, one which deals with the passage from innocence and experience and invokes equally terror and ecstasy…”—Tom Gunning\, Mecano Touring Program Catalogue \n1988\, U.S.\, 16mm\, silent\, 17 minutes. \n  \nThe Exquisite Hour \nPartly a lullaby for the dying\, partly a lament at the dusk of cinema. Based on the song by Reynaldo Hahn and Paul Verlaine. 1989-94\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 14 minutes. \n  \nClepsydra \nClepsydra is an ancient Greek water clock (literally\, “to steal water”). This film envisions the strip of celluloid going vertically through a projector as a sprocketed waterfall (random events measured in discreet units of time)\, through which the silent dreams of a young girl can barely be heard under the din of an irresistible torrent\, an irreversible torment. 1992\, U.S.\, 16mm\, silent\, 14 minutes. \n  \nThe Snowman \nA meditation on memory\, burial and decay – a belated kaddish for my father. 1995\, U.S.\, 16mm\, 8 minutes. \n  \nRehearsals for Retirement \n“A human life brought to an early stillness splashing down in oceanic oblivion searching for the depths of the sky. Darkness at the edge of town\, light at the end of the tunnel\, a stalled hearse and a souvenir from a dream. We walk in our sleep and fire walks with us. By fire we are consumed. Rehearsing for eternity\, for retirement. Life a sum of stolen moments stolen away by the Grand Theft. Next stop\, the twilight plane\, as an essence scattered\, haunting all we ever knew.”—Mark McElhatten \n2007\, U.S.\, digital\, 11 minutes. \n\nLamplightings is a free monthly program of experimental and underground film\, exploring the past and present of artists’ cinema with an emphasis on screening from 16mm or 35mm film whenever possible.

SUMMARY:KMAC Couture 2025: Art Walks the Runway
DESCRIPTION:KMAC Contemporary Art Museum\, located in historic downtown on Museum Row is Louisville’s premier contemporary art museum. Through exhibitions\, education\, and outreach\, KMAC works to connect people to art and creative practice. KMAC is where Art is the Big Idea and Craft is the Process. \nAbout the event:\nKMAC Couture is a wearable art runway show presented as the signature fundraiser for KMAC that provides funding for the Museum’s education programs and exhibits. KMAC Couture launched in 2013 as a distinct fashion event that allowed KMAC to showcase its unique position as a contemporary art museum that celebrates ideas at the crossroads of art\, craft\, and design. \nAs KMAC Couture enters the teenage years\, our 2025 runway celebrates the occasion of its auspicious thirteenth birthday with a tribute to all things lucky. All looks for this edition of Art Walks the Runway will pay homage to the charms and superstitions that offer hope and allow us to explore that sometimes all too rare of human faculties—the ability to dream and to think big! \nHere is a preview of the show \nSome participants over the years have invented their own textiles and employed unconventional materials that help push the boundaries of wearability\, constructing work that can be both costume and sculpture. Others have created fantastical garments with a more functional and durable quality\, but that are likewise extraordinary in how they explore the range of possibilities for artistic expression through the items we wear\, canvasing the human body in limitless ways. \nKMAC Couture will return home to Main Street for 2025! The event will take place in front of KMAC Contemporary Art Museum\, in a tented area that spans the 700 block of Main Street! \nWe at KMAC are excited to see you there to celebrate KMAC Couture “Lucky#13” and look forward to seeing you on April 19th at 7:15 p.m. \nEVENT DETAILS:\nDate: Saturday April 19th\, 2025 \nLocation: KMAC Contemporary Art Museum\, 715 W Main Street\, Louisville\, KY 40202 \n*Carpooling and ridesharing is encouraged\, limited parking available via street parking or paid lots in the area of the museum. \n  \nSchedule:\n7:15p Pre-show Cocktail Reception \n8:30p KMAC Couture Runway Show \nAfter Party immediately follows Runway Show inside KMAC Museum! \n  \nRequested Attire:\nShades of white/ neutrals are requested to allow the garments in the show to really POP! \n  \nSilent Auction:\nPlease regularly visit http://www.kmacmuseum.org/couture for updates to the KMAC Couture 2025 Silent Auction packages. \n  \nPlease note: \nAll ticket purchases are non-refundable\, even in the event a live event is not possible because of issues related to Covid-19 or inclement weather.
