SUMMARY:"Michelangelo: Love and Death" Screening
DESCRIPTION:Michelangelo: Love and Death\nDirected by David Bickerstaff \nExhibition on Screen \n\nSaturday\, May 31\, 12:30 pm | BUY TICKETS\nSunday\, June 1\, 12:30 pm | BUY TICKETS\n\n$12 | $10 Speed members \nThe spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us\, but what do we really know about this Renaissance giant? Michelangelo’s genius is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue of David\, the moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter\, and his tour-de-force\, the Sistine Chapel ceiling\, still leave us breathless today. \nSpanning his 88 years\, Michelangelo: Love and Death take a cinematic journey through the print and drawing rooms of Europe through the great chapels and museums of Florence\, Rome\, and the Vatican to seek out a deeper understanding of this legendary figure’s tempestuous life\, his relationship with his contemporaries\, and his incredible legacy. \nThrough expert commentary\, stunning visuals\, and Michelangelo’s own words\, this film takes a fresh look at a master artist whose life and genius are celebrated in every mark he made. 2017\, U.K.\, DCP\, 90 minutes. Recommended for 12+.

SUMMARY:Reception: O Art presents "Earth Frame Project: Prologue Yasunori Matsui"
DESCRIPTION:Yasunori Matsui\, born in Kobe\, Japan\, has been based in Louisville\, KY\, since the summer of 2023.\nFrom 2012 to 2015\, Matsui photographed landscapes affected by wildfires in collaboration with the\nAlaska National Park Service Fire Management\, which led to the initiation of the Earth Frame Project\nin 2019. This project reflects observations of natural lifecycles and civilization’s impacts on nature\, as\nmirrored in landscapes altered by both linear and non-linear events of Mother Nature and human\nactivities during a period of rapid change on our planet\, Earth. \nMatsui’s belief in the infinite capabilities of visual language through physical installations is reflected\nin his commitment to presenting the project as curated experiences\, showcased exclusively through\nprinted images. This approach enhances audience engagement in contrast to the current trends widely\nembraced on digital platforms\, which are driven by ever-evolving technology. His vision\, combined\nwith the technical expertise and knowledge gained from his professional experiences\, aims to capture\nthe adaptability and resilience of nature\, which operates on ecological cycles significantly longer than those of humanity. This mission is one he intends to pass on to future generations. \nJoin us this Friday to OPEN premiere his work to Louisville @o.riginal.art from 5-9.\nSaturday hours and Sunday artist discussion will also be held. \n@thingstolou @louisvillevisualart @leoweekly @courierjournal @louisville.ky #art #photographer #photography #louisville #cincinnati @natalieodesign \n  \n**description from Instagram Post

SUMMARY:Killer of Sheep at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration \nKiller of Sheep\nDirected by Charles Burnett \nSaturday\, June 7\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \nSunday\, June 8\, 2 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Killer of Sheep is unlike any other American film of its time or any other.” —Ann Hornaday\, Washington Post \nCharles Burnett’s cinematic masterpiece Killer of Sheep\, magnificently restored in 4K with sparkling picture and sound\, is one of the crown jewels of the Black indie filmmaking movement known as the L.A. Rebellion. The film evokes the everyday trials\, fragile pleasures\, and tenacious humor of blue-collar African Americans living in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles in the 1970s. Burnett made it on a minuscule budget with a mostly nonprofessional cast\, combining keen on-the-street observation with a carefully crafted script. \nThe story centers on Stan (Henry Gayle Sanders)\, a slaughterhouse worker battling exhaustion and disconnected from his wife\, his children\, and himself. Stan and his neighbors struggle just to get by\, let alone get ahead. Only the kids\, leaping from roof to roof\, seem to achieve a mobility that eludes their elders. Burnett’s film focuses on everyday life in Black communities in a manner rarely seen in American cinema–combining lyrical elements with a starkly neorealist\, documentary-style approach that combines deep nuance with riveting simplicity. Burnett once said of the film\, “[Stan’s] real problems lie within the family\, trying to make that work and be a human being. You don’t necessarily win battles; you survive.” 1977\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 80 minutes. \nKiller of Sheep has been digitally restored to 4K and remastered by UCLA Film & Television Archive\, Milestone Films\, and the Criterion Collection. Picture Restoration: Illuminate Hollywood. Photochemical Film Preservation: Film Technology Company. Sound Mix and Restoration: John Polito of Audio Mechanics and Larry Blake. Audio Transfers: DJ Audio\, Endpoint Audio Labs. Music Rights: Chris Robertson\, Global ImageWorks and Milestone Films. SUMMARY:"Ikiru" @ Speed Cinema (multiple screenings)
DESCRIPTION:“I think this is one of the few movies that might actually be able to inspire someone to lead their life a little differently.”—Roger Ebert \nOne of the greatest achievements by Akira Kurosawa\, Ikiru shows the director at his most compassionate—affirming life through an exploration of death. Takashi Shimura beautifully portrays Kanji Watanabe\, an aging bureaucrat with stomach cancer who is impelled to find meaning in his final days. \nPresented in a radically conceived two-part structure and shot with a perceptive\, humanistic clarity of vision\, Ikiru is a multifaceted look at what it means to be alive. \nThe film was remade by Oliver Hermanus in 2022 as Living\, starring Bill Nighy and set in 1950s London. 1952\, Japan\, 4K DCP\, in Japanese with English subtitles\, 143 minutes.
