SUMMARY:3rd Annual Bonsai Weekend @ Waterfront Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:  \n3rd Annual Bonsai Weekend\nTICKETS ON SALE NOW! \n\nFriday\, May 30 | 11AM – 5PM\nSaturday\, May 31 | 10AM – 6PM\nSunday\, June 1 | 11AM – 4PM\n\n\n \nTickets:\n$12 in advance\, $15 at the door \nFREE ages 16 and under \nTickets purchased are valid for the whole weekend\, May 30 – June 1\, and re-entry is welcome! \nGET TICKETS HERE \n  \nWORKSHOPS \nWorkshops include admission to Bonsai Weekend\, no extra ticket needed \n\nBYO Tree Workshop – Friday\nJapanese Maple Forest Workshop – Saturday\nAzalea Workshop – Sunday\n\n  \nDEMONSTRATIONS \nDemonstrations do not include admission to Bonsai Weekend please purchase a ticket above. \nDemonstration by Owen Reich – Friday \nDemonstration by Owen Reich – Saturday \n \n\nSpecial guest Judge: Owen Reich \n3rd Annual Bonsai Weekend special guest judge Owen Reich \nOwen Reich has been on a journey to become both a bonsai master of all species and styles as well as a plantsman. This required a complete understanding of horticulture (UGA ‘06) and direct interaction with Japan’s native species. \nCentral Japan is very much like the southeastern United States\, so after building and managing Samara Farms LLC he spent three years of apprenticeship at Fujikawa Kouka-en in Osaka\, Japan. \nOwen learned how to care for multi-generational bonsai of all species\, instead of focusing on conifers only. \nUnderstanding the 3-5 year rhythms of deciduous trees commonly used for bonsai in Central Japan was primary interest for studying deciduous species and kusamono\, with three years of styling time on tons of conifers. \nExhibition preparation and container / stand harmony is a big part of Kouka-en’s specialty\, so Owen’s approach to exhibitions is largely focused on overall display harmony and allusions to the current and upcoming seasons. \nOwen’s current focus is on deciduous and broadleaf evergreen species of all kinds\, especially those native to the eastern half of the United States of America\, utilizing these for bonsai is likely the future of introductory bonsai training. \nCurrent habitat restoration and design / build project is Bask Retreat Center in Centerville\, Tennessee. A Japanese inspired moss garden with all native species and their cultivars will be proof of concept for expansion of this garden style. \n\nBonsai Weekend Vendors \nIn Vivo Bonsai\, Green Witch Gardens\, Asian Artique\, Clayfoot Pottery\, Twisted Nature Bonsai\, Pottery Cat Designs Studio\, Hagabon\, Myrick Bonsai Pottery \n\n \n***photography used with permission by Clayton Communications. That first winter he lost all but one of his fledgling trees in the harsh Midwestern winter. After that loss he started taking workshops and lessons to learn how to better care for his trees. In 1986\, he visited the Midwest Bonsai Society show at the Chicago Botanic Garden for the first time. \n“I was so inspired I started doing workshops and lessons every chance I got\,” said Malhiot\, who would go on to win Midwest’s Best in Show for an elm forest planting 20 years later. He has also been an active member of the Prairie State Bonsai Society where he has served as a board member and President. \nOver the years\, Malhiot has taught many students throughout the region from his early years at Ivan Watters Yasukanai Bonsai shop in Morton Grove to his own bonsai garden in the Chicago’s western suburbs. He has demonstrated the art of Bonsai throughout the Midwest and judged a variety of exhibitions and shows including for the Midwest Bonsai Society show at the Chicago Botanic Garden\, Milwaukee Bonsai Society\, and others. \nAmong his many awards is the American Bonsai Society’s Award of Merit for yamadori\, Best in Show at the Midwest Bonsai Society show in 2006\, and the Best in Show and People’s Choice at two Prairie State Bonsai Society shows. \nClick here to register for Phil’s Bonsai Weekend workshops and demonstrations.
