She writes and speaks locally\, nationally\, and internationally about shifting the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors\, culture change\, racial justice\, and leadership of women of color. SUMMARY:Author Meredith R. Lyons discusses 'A Dagger of Lightning' with Meg Shaffer | Carmichael's
DESCRIPTION:Meredith R. Lyons discusses A Dagger of Lightning with Meg Shaffer \nCarmichael’s is excited to host Meredith R. Lyons for her new book\, A Dagger of Lightning. She will be joined in conversation by Meg Shaffer. \nAbout the Book:\nLet’s get one thing straight: I am not your chosen one. \nForty-five-year-old Imogen has always struggled to fit in\, never finding her passion in life. And while that may include having cold feet in her impending nuptials\, that doesn’t mean she’s ready to ditch planet Earth—and her entire life—completely. \nWhen Imogen is kidnapped by an alien prince in disguise\, there’s nothing she can do to stop him. He’s sidhe—a being with powerful abilities—and he’s grown up used to getting what he wants. The prince is convinced Imogen will fall in love with him\, and that her new powers\, once she’s turned sidhe\, will help his country win a centuries-old feud. \nWith the help of the prince’s much more tolerable brother\, Imogen starts to get her feet back under her\, but even he can’t protect her from those who would use her for her powers. If Imogen can’t find a way to fight for herself\, she’ll become a pawn in a world that has already decided what she’s going to be. \nAbout the Author:\nMeredith grew up in New Orleans\, collecting two degrees from Louisiana State University before running away to Chicago to be an actor. In between plays\, she got her black belt and made martial arts and yoga her full-time day job. She fought in the Chicago Golden Gloves\, ran the Chicago Marathon\, and competed for team USA in the Savate World Championships in Paris. In spite of doing each of these things twice\, she couldn’t stay warm and relocated to Nashville. She owns several swords\, but lives a non-violent life\, saving all swashbuckling for the page\, knitting scarves\, gardening\, visiting coffee shops\, and cuddling with her husband and two panther-sized cats. She’s a member of International Thriller Writers\, Sisters in Crime\, and the Women’s National Book Association. Her first novel Ghost Tamer is an Amazon Editor’s Pick for Best SciFi Fantasy\, an IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Winner for Best SciFi Fantasy\, an IPPY Award Winner for Best First Book\, and a Silver Falchion Winner for Best Book of 2023 and Best Supernatural. A Dagger of Lighting releases April 1\, 2025\, both with CamCat Books.

SUMMARY:Louisville Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Louisville Book Festival will be held in downtown Louisville\, KY on October 18th and 19th from 10 am to 6 pm at the Kentucky International Convention Center. \nThis year will continue to give us the opportunity to celebrate the city’s culture and resiliency\, while striving towards the goal that all children have access to books in their home. Highway 65 is the divide between east and west Louisville. West of 65\, there are no book stores which greatly reduces access to books for our children and youth\, creating a book desert. \nOur goal for the Louisville Book Festival is to ensure every child that attends the Book Festival on Children’s Day leaves with at least one free age appropriate book. We will continue to work on the goal of getting books in to the hands of children year round through our programs like It Pays to Read. \nAbout: \nThe Louisville Book Festival is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 2018 to celebrate and promote the love and the benefits of reading\, writing\, and literacy. \nWe believe that literacy is a fundamental human right and that there is power and purpose in bringing books to life every day of the year. We celebrate books and use them to highlight and grow the resilient culture of our vibrant city\, as well as to encourage and elevate our creative thinking as a community.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Elijah Wald | Speaker Event & Music Performance
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 5th\, we are honored to host a very special evening with Elijah Wald\, author of “Dylan Goes Electric!” \nElijah will discuss his influential book’s adaptation for the upcoming Bob Dylan biographical film “A Complete Unknown”\, starring Timothée Chalamet\, in theaters this Christmas. \nFollowing the discussion\, Elijah\, a grammy award-winning musician as well as music historian\, will perform a selection of songs from Dylan’s catalog as well as other American folk classics. \nOn the evening of July 25\, 1965\, Bob Dylan took the stage at Newport Folk Festival backed by an electric band and roared into a blistering version of “Maggie’s Farm\,” followed by his new rock hit\, “Like a Rolling Stone.” The audience of committed folkies and political activists who had hailed him as their acoustic prophet (mixed with some young rock fans who loved the Byrds and Beatles and his new sound) reacted with a mix of shock\, booing\, and cheers. It was the shot heard round the world—Dylan’s declaration of musical independence\, the end of the folk revival\, and the birth of rock as the voice of a generation—and one of the defining moments in twentieth-century music. \nWald’s visit promises a rare blend of live music and storytelling\, making this an unmissable evening for music lovers and Dylan fans alike. \nLimited $10 tickets are available on OpenTable. \n  \n***Description from website

SUMMARY:Author Scott Guild presents new book "Plastic"
DESCRIPTION:Description from website: \n\nScott Guild presents Plastic \nEvent date: \nWednesday\, July 10\, 2024 – 8:00pm\n1318 BARDSTOWN RD.\nLouisville\, KY 40204 \nCarmichael’s Bookstore is excited to host Scott Guild for his newest book\, Plastic. This event will be held at The Monarch (1318 Bardstown Rd). \nAbout the Book: \nErin is a plastic girl living in a plastic world. Every day she eats a breakfast of boiled chicken\, then conveys her articulated body to Tablet Town\, where she sells other figurines Smartbodies: wearable tech that allows full\, physical immersion in a virtual world\, a refuge from real life’s brutal wars\, oppressive governmental monitoring\, and omnipresent eco-terrorist insurgency. If you cut her\, she will not bleed—but she and her fellow figurines can still be cracked or blown apart by gunfire or bombs\, or crumble away from nuclear fallout. Erin\, who’s lost her father\, sister\, and the love of her life\, certainly knows plenty about death. \nAn attack at her place of work brings Erin another too-intimate experience\, but it also brings her Jacob: a blind figurine whom she comforts in the aftermath\, and with whom she feels an almost instant connection. For the first time in years\, Erin begins to experience hope—hope that until now she’s only gleaned from watching her favorite TV show\, the surrealist retro sitcom “Nuclear Family.” Exploring the wild wonders of the virtual reality landscape together\, it seems that possibly\, slowly\, Erin and Jacob may have a chance at healing from their trauma. But then secrets from Erin’s family’s past begin to invade her carefully constructed reality\, and cracks in the facade she’s constructed around her life threaten to reveal everything vulnerable beneath. \nBoth a crypto-comedic dystopian fantasy and a deadly serious dissection of our own farcical pre-apocalypse\, Scott Guild’s debut novel is an achingly beautiful\, disarmingly welcoming\, and fabulously inventive look at the hollow core of modern American society—and a guide to how we might reanimate all its broken plastic pieces. \nAbout the Author: \nScott Guild received his MFA from the New Writers Project at the University of Texas at Austin\, and his PhD in English from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He served for years as assistant director of Pen City Writers\, a prison writing initiative for incarcerated students. He is currently an assistant professor at Marian University in Indianapolis\, where he teaches literature and creative writing. Before his degrees\, Scott was the songwriter and lead guitarist for the new wave band New Collisions\, which toured with the B-52s and opened for Blondie. \n
