SUMMARY:Killer of Sheep at Speed Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New 4K Restoration \nKiller of Sheep\nDirected by Charles Burnett \nSaturday\, June 7\, 6 pm | BUY TICKETS \nSunday\, June 8\, 2 pm | BUY TICKETS \n$12 | $8 Speed members \n“Killer of Sheep is unlike any other American film of its time or any other.” —Ann Hornaday\, Washington Post \nCharles Burnett’s cinematic masterpiece Killer of Sheep\, magnificently restored in 4K with sparkling picture and sound\, is one of the crown jewels of the Black indie filmmaking movement known as the L.A. Rebellion. The film evokes the everyday trials\, fragile pleasures\, and tenacious humor of blue-collar African Americans living in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles in the 1970s. Burnett made it on a minuscule budget with a mostly nonprofessional cast\, combining keen on-the-street observation with a carefully crafted script. \nThe story centers on Stan (Henry Gayle Sanders)\, a slaughterhouse worker battling exhaustion and disconnected from his wife\, his children\, and himself. Stan and his neighbors struggle just to get by\, let alone get ahead. Only the kids\, leaping from roof to roof\, seem to achieve a mobility that eludes their elders. Burnett’s film focuses on everyday life in Black communities in a manner rarely seen in American cinema–combining lyrical elements with a starkly neorealist\, documentary-style approach that combines deep nuance with riveting simplicity. Burnett once said of the film\, “[Stan’s] real problems lie within the family\, trying to make that work and be a human being. You don’t necessarily win battles; you survive.” 1977\, U.S.\, 4K DCP\, 80 minutes. \nKiller of Sheep has been digitally restored to 4K and remastered by UCLA Film & Television Archive\, Milestone Films\, and the Criterion Collection. Picture Restoration: Illuminate Hollywood. Photochemical Film Preservation: Film Technology Company. Sound Mix and Restoration: John Polito of Audio Mechanics and Larry Blake. Audio Transfers: DJ Audio\, Endpoint Audio Labs. Music Rights: Chris Robertson\, Global ImageWorks and Milestone Films. Restoration supervised by Ross Lipman and Jillian Borders in consultation with Charles Burnett. \n  \n***description from website

SUMMARY:KMAC Couture 2025: Art Walks the Runway
DESCRIPTION:KMAC Contemporary Art Museum\, located in historic downtown on Museum Row is Louisville’s premier contemporary art museum. Through exhibitions\, education\, and outreach\, KMAC works to connect people to art and creative practice. KMAC is where Art is the Big Idea and Craft is the Process. \nAbout the event:\nKMAC Couture is a wearable art runway show presented as the signature fundraiser for KMAC that provides funding for the Museum’s education programs and exhibits. KMAC Couture launched in 2013 as a distinct fashion event that allowed KMAC to showcase its unique position as a contemporary art museum that celebrates ideas at the crossroads of art\, craft\, and design. \nAs KMAC Couture enters the teenage years\, our 2025 runway celebrates the occasion of its auspicious thirteenth birthday with a tribute to all things lucky. All looks for this edition of Art Walks the Runway will pay homage to the charms and superstitions that offer hope and allow us to explore that sometimes all too rare of human faculties—the ability to dream and to think big! \nHere is a preview of the show \nSome participants over the years have invented their own textiles and employed unconventional materials that help push the boundaries of wearability\, constructing work that can be both costume and sculpture. Others have created fantastical garments with a more functional and durable quality\, but that are likewise extraordinary in how they explore the range of possibilities for artistic expression through the items we wear\, canvasing the human body in limitless ways. \nKMAC Couture will return home to Main Street for 2025! The event will take place in front of KMAC Contemporary Art Museum\, in a tented area that spans the 700 block of Main Street! \nWe at KMAC are excited to see you there to celebrate KMAC Couture “Lucky#13” and look forward to seeing you on April 19th at 7:15 p.m. \nEVENT DETAILS:\nDate: Saturday April 19th\, 2025 \nLocation: KMAC Contemporary Art Museum\, 715 W Main Street\, Louisville\, KY 40202 \n*Carpooling and ridesharing is encouraged\, limited parking available via street parking or paid lots in the area of the museum. \n  \nSchedule:\n7:15p Pre-show Cocktail Reception \n8:30p KMAC Couture Runway Show \nAfter Party immediately follows Runway Show inside KMAC Museum! \n  \nRequested Attire:\nShades of white/ neutrals are requested to allow the garments in the show to really POP! \n  \nSilent Auction:\nPlease regularly visit http://www.kmacmuseum.org/couture for updates to the KMAC Couture 2025 Silent Auction packages. \n  \nPlease note: \nAll ticket purchases are non-refundable\, even in the event a live event is not possible because of issues related to Covid-19 or inclement weather. SUMMARY:"Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939" @ Speed Art Museum (multiple dates\, March 29-June 22)
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 – JUNE 22\, 2025\n3rd Floor\, North Building\nVenue Curator: Erika Holmquist-Wall \nBuy Tickets \nDuring the early twentieth century\, Paris was the destination of choice for talented and independent American women determined to move beyond the limitations that restricted them at home. Drawn by a strong desire for independence\, they crossed the Atlantic to pursue personal and professional ambitions in a city viewed as the epicenter of modernity. Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939 recaptures the experiences of these unorthodox women who found in Paris the freedom to blaze new trails in a variety of fields\, including art\, literature\, design\, publishing\, music\, fashion\, journalism\, theater\, and dance. As foreigners in a cosmopolitan city\, they escaped the societal expectations and constraints of both the United States and France. Many used their newfound liberty as an opportunity for self-reinvention and discovery. \nPortraiture provides a revealing lens through which to view the cultural shifts American women helped instigate in Paris. Their defiance of social\, professional\, and gender norms rendered conventional modes of female portraiture obsolete. Brilliant Exiles highlights the dynamic role of portraiture in articulating the refashioned sense of self and the new conceptions of modern female identity that resulted from the interventions of American women in Parisian life. \nDespite significant differences in their circumstances\, the women in this exhibition shared many experiences and points of contact. Featuring over 85 artworks across various media and accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue\, Brilliant Exiles visually graphs the social and creative networks and points of intersection that linked these various groups\, with an emphasis on sites of sociability and production that were overseen by women. Through vivid portraits and compelling biographies\, the catalogue and exhibition recover a history that will be unfamiliar to many museum visitors\, revealing the impact that American Women had on modernist Paris\, as well as the city’s transformative effect on these brilliant exiles from the United States. \n  \nThis exhibition has been organized by the National Portrait Gallery and received Federal support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative Pool\, administered by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \n  \n  \n***Description from website
