SUMMARY:Underground Whiskey Tasting - featuring George Dickel Distillery
DESCRIPTION:A tasting with Nicole Austin in the underground Mega Cavern! \nBorn 40 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, George A. Dickel was an established Nashville merchant when he entered the whisky business. \nDickel grew his reputation for selling the smoothest\, most mellow spirits in the region. Thus\, Geo. A. Dickel & Co. was born and when the Cascade Hollow Distillery opened in 1878 in neighboring Coffee County\, George Dickel bought a large share. \n\nOur presenter will be General Manager and Distiller\, Nicole Austin. \nNicole earned a degree in chemical engineering\, then began her career in environmental engineering. One night\, a bartender poured her a whiskey & started talking about how it was made. She listened to the bartender talk about whiskey for the rest of the night. This led to her career in the distilling business. \nSince joining the Cascade Hollow team in 2018\, she’s been instrumental in the latest innovations – including George Dickel Bottled in Bond Distilling\, Dickel Bourbon\, the George Dickel x Leopold Bros Collaboration Rye Blend and Cascade Moon Whisky series. \nIf you ask Nicole what’s one thing she wants people to know about Tennessee whiskey\, she’ll say “It’s bourbon!” \n\nOur event will take place in an old limestone mine\, known as the Mega Cavern. \nA few interesting facts: \n\nThe cavern was mined from the 1930’s to the early 1970’s.\nThe mine extends below the Louisville Zoo\, and also goes under all 10 lanes of the Watterson Expressway (I-264).\nThe temperature in the Mega Cavern is 58 degrees year round.\n\nOf course we’ll have tasty food and awesome door prizes\, as always. \nThe Bourbon Brotherhood is a monthly gathering of men who enjoy bourbon and camaraderie. You must be 21+ to attend this event. Please drink responsibly.

SUMMARY:Chuck Klosterman discusses 'Football' book with Pat Forde
DESCRIPTION:Carmichael’s is excited to host Chuck Klosterman for his new book\, Football. He will be joined in conversation by Pat Forde. \nThis is a ticketed event. Each ticket includes a copy of Football. Click HERE to purchase tickets. The event will be held at Highlands Community Ministries 1228 E Breckinridge St. 40204 \nAbout the book: \nA hilarious but nonetheless groundbreaking contribution to the argument about which force shapes American life the most. \nFor two kinds of readers—those who know it’s football and those who are about to find out. \n\nChuck Klosterman—New York Times bestselling critic\, journalist\, and\, yes\, football psychotic—did not write this book to deepen your appreciation of the game. He’s not trying to help you become that person at the party\, or to teach you how to make better bets\, or to validate any preexisting views you might have about the sport (positive or negative). Football does\, in fact\, do all of those things. But not in the way such things have been done in the past\, and never in a way any normal person would expect. \nCultural theorists talk about hyperobjects—phenomena that bulk so large that their true dimensions are hidden in plain sight. In 2023\, 93 of the 100 most-watched programs on U.S. television were NFL football games. This is not an anomaly. This is how society is best understood. Football is not merely the country’s most popular sport; it is engrained in almost everything that explains what America is\, even for those who barely pay attention. \nKlosterman gets to the bottom of all of it. He takes us to a metaphorical projection of Texas\, where the religion of six-man football merges with America’s Team [sic] and makes an inexplicable impact on a boy in North Dakota. He dissects the question of natural greatness\, the paradox of gambling and war\, and the timeless caricature of the uncompromising head coach. He interrogates the perfection of football’s marriage with television and the morality of acceptable risk. He even conjures an extinction-level event. If Žižek liked the SEC more than he liked cinema\, if Stephen Jay Gould cared about linebackers more than he cared about dinosaurs\, if Steve Martin played quarterback instead of the banjo . . . it would still be nothing like this. \nA century ago\, Yale’s legendary coach Walter Camp wrote his unified theory of the game. He called it Football. Chuck Klosterman has given us a new Camp for the new age\, rooted in a personal history he cannot escape \nAbout the Author: \nChuck Klosterman is the bestselling author of ten nonfiction books (including The Nineties; Sex\, Drugs\, and Cocoa Puffs; and But What If We’re Wrong?)\, two novels (Downtown Owl and The Visible Man)\, and the short story collection Raised in Captivity. He has written for The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, GQ (London)\, Esquire\, Spin\, The Guardian (London)\, The Believer\, and ESPN. Klosterman served as the Ethicist for The New York Times Magazine for three years and was an original founder of the website Grantland with Bill Simmons. He was raised in rural North Dakota and now lives in Portland\, Oregon. \nPat Forde is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated who covers college football and college basketball as well as the Olympics and horse racing. He co-hosts the “Others Receiving Votes” college football podcast and is a frequent contributor to “The Tony Kornheiser Show” and other audio and video productions. He previously worked for Yahoo Sports\, ESPN and The (Louisville) Courier-Journal. Forde has won 28 Associated Press Sports Editors writing contest awards\, has been published three times in the Best American Sports Writing book series\, and was nominated for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize. A past president and Hall of Fame member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association\, and a member of the Football Writers Association of America\, he lives in Louisville with his wife. They have three children\, all of whom were collegiate swimmers. \n***description from eventbrite
