SUMMARY:Chuck Klosterman discusses 'Football' book with Pat Forde
DESCRIPTION:Carmichael’s is excited to host Chuck Klosterman for his new book\, Football. He will be joined in conversation by Pat Forde. \nThis is a ticketed event. Each ticket includes a copy of Football. Click HERE to purchase tickets. The event will be held at Highlands Community Ministries 1228 E Breckinridge St. 40204 \nAbout the book: \nA hilarious but nonetheless groundbreaking contribution to the argument about which force shapes American life the most. \nFor two kinds of readers—those who know it’s football and those who are about to find out. \n\nChuck Klosterman—New York Times bestselling critic\, journalist\, and\, yes\, football psychotic—did not write this book to deepen your appreciation of the game. He’s not trying to help you become that person at the party\, or to teach you how to make better bets\, or to validate any preexisting views you might have about the sport (positive or negative). Football does\, in fact\, do all of those things. But not in the way such things have been done in the past\, and never in a way any normal person would expect. \nCultural theorists talk about hyperobjects—phenomena that bulk so large that their true dimensions are hidden in plain sight. In 2023\, 93 of the 100 most-watched programs on U.S. television were NFL football games. This is not an anomaly. This is how society is best understood. Football is not merely the country’s most popular sport; it is engrained in almost everything that explains what America is\, even for those who barely pay attention. \nKlosterman gets to the bottom of all of it. He takes us to a metaphorical projection of Texas\, where the religion of six-man football merges with America’s Team [sic] and makes an inexplicable impact on a boy in North Dakota. He dissects the question of natural greatness\, the paradox of gambling and war\, and the timeless caricature of the uncompromising head coach. He interrogates the perfection of football’s marriage with television and the morality of acceptable risk. He even conjures an extinction-level event. If Žižek liked the SEC more than he liked cinema\, if Stephen Jay Gould cared about linebackers more than he cared about dinosaurs\, if Steve Martin played quarterback instead of the banjo . . . it would still be nothing like this. \nA century ago\, Yale’s legendary coach Walter Camp wrote his unified theory of the game. He called it Football. Chuck Klosterman has given us a new Camp for the new age\, rooted in a personal history he cannot escape \nAbout the Author: \nChuck Klosterman is the bestselling author of ten nonfiction books (including The Nineties; Sex\, Drugs\, and Cocoa Puffs; and But What If We’re Wrong?)\, two novels (Downtown Owl and The Visible Man)\, and the short story collection Raised in Captivity. He has written for The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, GQ (London)\, Esquire\, Spin\, The Guardian (London)\, The Believer\, and ESPN. Klosterman served as the Ethicist for The New York Times Magazine for three years and was an original founder of the website Grantland with Bill Simmons. He was raised in rural North Dakota and now lives in Portland\, Oregon. \nPat Forde is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated who covers college football and college basketball as well as the Olympics and horse racing. He co-hosts the “Others Receiving Votes” college football podcast and is a frequent contributor to “The Tony Kornheiser Show” and other audio and video productions. He previously worked for Yahoo Sports\, ESPN and The (Louisville) Courier-Journal. Forde has won 28 Associated Press Sports Editors writing contest awards\, has been published three times in the Best American Sports Writing book series\, and was nominated for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize. A past president and Hall of Fame member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association\, and a member of the Football Writers Association of America\, he lives in Louisville with his wife. They have three children\, all of whom were collegiate swimmers. \n***description from eventbrite

From its gritty carnival roots to its place at the center of pop culture\, professional wrestling blends theater\, athleticism\, and spectacle in ways no other entertainment medium does. As French theorist Roland Barthes once described it\, wrestling is “a spectacle of excess”—and this event brings that spectacle to life. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nA live conversation held inside an actual wrestling ring at the Speed Art Museum \nInsightful stories and cultural commentary from two of wrestling’s most thoughtful voices \nA spotlight on Kentucky’s pivotal role in shaping the global wrestling industry \nA celebration of iconic wrestling figures who got their start in this region—from “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Hillbilly Jim to The Rock\, Dave Bautista\, and John Cena \nAs part of the evening\, the wrestling ring itself will be on display as a bold pop-art centerpiece inside the Speed Art Museum\, highlighting wrestling’s status not just as a sport or an entertainment—but as a dynamic\, living art form. \nWhether you’ve followed wrestling for decades or you’re simply curious about its cultural impact\, this event promises to be enlightening\, entertaining\, and totally unique. Expect laughs\, insight\, nostalgia\, and maybe even a surprise or two. \nSpace is limited\, so grab your tickets now and be part of a truly immersive experience that blurs the line between sport\, spectacle\, and storytelling. \nBuy Tickets \nLimited space. Sign ups start here on Monday\, April 21\, 9:00 am \nAbout the speaker \nNatalie is the driving creative force behind the namesake firm Natalie O Design at 701 Kentucky Street in Louisville. She is first and foremost a storyteller\, “the narrator\, the interpreter and the voice that allows clients’ stories to be expressed with clarity and beauty.” You will find her work visible throughout the city\, the interior updates at 500 Jefferson\, the facade of Republic Bank\, the original Story Co-Working space\, Please and Thank You in Nulu\, Bamboo Coffee and Donuts\, newly opened Atomic and Ashbrook Hotel in Frankfort. Her interior design team crafted a careful restoration of the historic and iconic Leight House\, featured at the Speed.\nShe has been in lock step with the owner of the Russell neighborhood 16 room mansion renovation (Follow @RemakingaMansion). Her projects and writing span publication in Dwell\, Aspire Design and Home\, Apartment Therapy and documentation on Magnolia Networks\, “Where We Call Home” and “In With the Old”. With over 25 years’ shared and built experience in fashion and design\, Natalie brings an earnest and fresh approach to her work. Gathered from rural Indiana life and collected experiences in Chicago\, New York and London\, the spine of her craft is deeply rooted in searches for innovative and unique pieces. Thriving on the use of textiles\, texture and unexpected touches\, her work spotlights local makers and artists in both residential and commercial projects.\nYou can find her “side hustle” passion for art nested in the wall of her studio at her OArt Gallery. This spring she will launch a collaborative furniture line at ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) in New York. The line aims to shine light on the combined talents of regional craftspeople bringing their love for the craftsmanship far beyond the often-expected folk art feel of the Midwest.\nYou can find her in the field with an intentional foot planted in the hands-on grit of the work\, and the other in the purpose of progress. The Natalie O Design is currently listed as an Architectural Digest Pro for 2025. Natalie is in lockstep with her team Julie\, Sydney and Maddy and enjoys parenting\, partnering and planting life in Kentucky\, by design. NOD is working in Nashville\, Cincinnati and as far away as New Jersey and California. \n  \n***Description from website
