SUMMARY:2nd Annual Bonsai Weekend @ Waterfront Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Description from website: \n\nBONSAI WEEKEND\n2nd Annual Bonsai Weekend · August 23 – 25 \nDozens of bonsai on display\, special guest artist and show judge Phil Malhiot\, people’s choice award\, bonsai workshops and demonstrations with the Greater Louisville Bonsai Society\, children’s programming\, bonsai vendors\, Asian-inspired cuisine\, and more! \n  \nTICKETS: \n$12 in advance | $15 at the door | $10 WBG & Bonsai Society Members \nAges 16 & Under: FREE \n  \nBonsai Weekend admission is included in the purchase of a workshop ticket. Demonstration attendees will still need to purchase Bonsai Weekend tickets. \nINTRODUCING SPECIAL GUEST JUDGE PHIL MALHIOT \nPhil Malhiot’s fascination with Bonsai began when he opened a friend’s refrigerator and saw a tiny tree on the shelf more than 40 years ago. That first winter he lost all but one of his fledgling trees in the harsh Midwestern winter. After that loss he started taking workshops and lessons to learn how to better care for his trees. In 1986\, he visited the Midwest Bonsai Society show at the Chicago Botanic Garden for the first time. \n“I was so inspired I started doing workshops and lessons every chance I got\,” said Malhiot\, who would go on to win Midwest’s Best in Show for an elm forest planting 20 years later. He has also been an active member of the Prairie State Bonsai Society where he has served as a board member and President. \nOver the years\, Malhiot has taught many students throughout the region from his early years at Ivan Watters Yasukanai Bonsai shop in Morton Grove to his own bonsai garden in the Chicago’s western suburbs. He has demonstrated the art of Bonsai throughout the Midwest and judged a variety of exhibitions and shows including for the Midwest Bonsai Society show at the Chicago Botanic Garden\, Milwaukee Bonsai Society\, and others. \nAmong his many awards is the American Bonsai Society’s Award of Merit for yamadori\, Best in Show at the Midwest Bonsai Society show in 2006\, and the Best in Show and People’s Choice at two Prairie State Bonsai Society shows. \nClick here to register for Phil’s Bonsai Weekend workshops and demonstrations.

SUMMARY:The Kids Center "Walk and Roll"
DESCRIPTION:The Kids Center Walk & Roll is back and better than ever! Grab your capes\, lace up your sneakers\, and join us as we walk\, roll\, and celebrate the incredible achievements of our kids. \nEach year\, families\, friends\, staff\, and community partners form teams to honor our children’s remarkable efforts. \nTogether\, we’ll walk or roll along Waterfront Park’s scenic one-mile path\, symbolizing our commitment to supporting their journey. \nFollowing the walk\, the festivities continue at the Big Four Lawn with games\, food\, interactive activities\, and more. It’s a day filled with joy\, laughter\, and fun for the whole family! \nClick here for tickets \nFor more information visit: https://kidscenterky.org/events-calendar/2024-walk-roll/ \nEVENT DETAILS\nSaturday\, August 24 | Waterfront Park\, Big Four Lawn\n8 AM – Registration Opens\n9 AM – Walk Begins \nFUNDRAISING GOAL: $100\,000 \nOver 300 walkers and rollers come together\, not just to walk\, but to raise funds and support Kids Center’s mission to provide access to transformative therapies\, regardless of a family’s financial capacity to afford the full cost of care. \nUnfortunately\, insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of these critical therapies\, leaving a funding gap of about $2\,000 per child each year. \nBecome part of a larger effort to empower children with physical\, behavioral\, and intellectual challenges. Together\, we can bridge the gap between state and insurance funding\, ensuring no child is turned away. Your support is an investment in the future of our community! \n**This event is produced by Kids Center for Pediatrics** \n  \n  \n***Description from website

SUMMARY:Monarch Butterfly Talk and Walk
DESCRIPTION:Please join our speaker\, Bob Jones at The Parklands for a unique talk on the Monarch Butterfly’s amazing migration and their historical significance. \nTo find more information about the content of the talk read additional information below. Then after the talk\, we will head outside to see if we can find and tag some of these butterflies as they make their way back to Mexico on their incredible migration. \nCome prepared to be outside for at least 30 minutes. \nYou may also have the option to walk through tall grasses while trying to capture monarch butterflies\, it is best to wear boots and long pants if you want to walk through our meadows. \nMonarch Butterfly Talk and Walk\nAugust 24\, 2024\n9:30 am – 10:30 am\nBeckley Creek Park \nThis talk and walk will take place on August 24th 2024 at 9:30am\, and will meet at The PNC Achievement Center in Beckley Creek Park. The talk will last around 30 minutes\, then we will spend the rest of the hour walking through the meadows surrounding the PNC Achievement Center. Pre-registration is required\, please sign up using the link below. It is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Once all the spots are filled registration will be closed. All supplies are included but you are welcome to bring a butterfly net if you have one. \nAdditional Information: \nThe Monarch Butterfly annually performs the longest migration of any insect in the world\, from as far north as southern Canada to south-central Mexico\, a distance of more than 3000 miles. The butterflies begin their migration south in August\, passing through Kentucky in late summer and early fall\, and gathering by December at several locations in the mountains south of Mexico City. The number of Monarchs that winter at these sites are estimated in the hundreds of millions\, all having migrated from the north. Many head back north in the spring\, along the way laying eggs on milkweed to birth the next generation. This phenomenon has been going on since well before humans inhabited the Americas. \nBut once Mexico was inhabited\, these butterflies were not ignored\, and there is evidence today of widespread prevalence of Mesoamerican butterfly symbols dating from as early as 100 BC\, and which were seen by the Aztecs as the returning souls of warriors slain in battle. In more recent times\, the monarch in Mexico has taken on a special symbolic meaning and its image is an important part of the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations in early November. \nBob Jones has been involved in the monarch migrations since the 1980s\, counting and tagging monarchs in California and now here in Kentucky. His presentation will take a look at both the North American migration and the Mesoamerican mythology of this amazing insect. \n  \n***Description from website

Since that time\, Patty has traveled France and Italy taking millinery classes from world class milliners\, has explored multiple hat and flower making facilities\, toured New York’s Garment District shops and the haberdasheries of Paris learning all aspects of the trade and process\, collecting beautiful\, fine quality materials along the way.
