SUMMARY:"Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939" @ Speed Art Museum (multiple dates\, March 29-June 22)
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 – JUNE 22\, 2025\n3rd Floor\, North Building\nVenue Curator: Erika Holmquist-Wall \nBuy Tickets \nDuring the early twentieth century\, Paris was the destination of choice for talented and independent American women determined to move beyond the limitations that restricted them at home. Drawn by a strong desire for independence\, they crossed the Atlantic to pursue personal and professional ambitions in a city viewed as the epicenter of modernity. Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939 recaptures the experiences of these unorthodox women who found in Paris the freedom to blaze new trails in a variety of fields\, including art\, literature\, design\, publishing\, music\, fashion\, journalism\, theater\, and dance. As foreigners in a cosmopolitan city\, they escaped the societal expectations and constraints of both the United States and France. Many used their newfound liberty as an opportunity for self-reinvention and discovery. \nPortraiture provides a revealing lens through which to view the cultural shifts American women helped instigate in Paris. Their defiance of social\, professional\, and gender norms rendered conventional modes of female portraiture obsolete. Brilliant Exiles highlights the dynamic role of portraiture in articulating the refashioned sense of self and the new conceptions of modern female identity that resulted from the interventions of American women in Parisian life. \nDespite significant differences in their circumstances\, the women in this exhibition shared many experiences and points of contact. Featuring over 85 artworks across various media and accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue\, Brilliant Exiles visually graphs the social and creative networks and points of intersection that linked these various groups\, with an emphasis on sites of sociability and production that were overseen by women. Through vivid portraits and compelling biographies\, the catalogue and exhibition recover a history that will be unfamiliar to many museum visitors\, revealing the impact that American Women had on modernist Paris\, as well as the city’s transformative effect on these brilliant exiles from the United States. \n  \nThis exhibition has been organized by the National Portrait Gallery and received Federal support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative Pool\, administered by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \n  \n  \n***Description from website

This required a complete understanding of horticulture (UGA ‘06) and direct interaction with Japan’s native species. \nCentral Japan is very much like the southeastern United States\, so after building and managing Samara Farms LLC he spent three years of apprenticeship at Fujikawa Kouka-en in Osaka\, Japan. \nOwen learned how to care for multi-generational bonsai of all species\, instead of focusing on conifers only. \nUnderstanding the 3-5 year rhythms of deciduous trees commonly used for bonsai in Central Japan was primary interest for studying deciduous species and kusamono\, with three years of styling time on tons of conifers. \nExhibition preparation and container / stand harmony is a big part of Kouka-en’s specialty\, so Owen’s approach to exhibitions is largely focused on overall display harmony and allusions to the current and upcoming seasons. \nOwen’s current focus is on deciduous and broadleaf evergreen species of all kinds\, especially those native to the eastern half of the United States of America\, utilizing these for bonsai is likely the future of introductory bonsai training. \nCurrent habitat restoration and design / build project is Bask Retreat Center in Centerville\, Tennessee. A Japanese inspired moss garden with all native species and their cultivars will be proof of concept for expansion of this garden style. \n\nBonsai Weekend Vendors \nIn Vivo Bonsai\, Green Witch Gardens\, Asian Artique\, Clayfoot Pottery\, Twisted Nature Bonsai\, Pottery Cat Designs Studio\, Hagabon\, Myrick Bonsai Pottery \n\n \n***photography used with permission by Clayton Communications. SUMMARY:"Michelangelo: Love and Death" Screening
DESCRIPTION:Michelangelo: Love and Death\nDirected by David Bickerstaff \nExhibition on Screen \n\nSaturday\, May 31\, 12:30 pm | BUY TICKETS\nSunday\, June 1\, 12:30 pm | BUY TICKETS\n\n$12 | $10 Speed members \nThe spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us\, but what do we really know about this Renaissance giant? Michelangelo’s genius is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue of David\, the moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter\, and his tour-de-force\, the Sistine Chapel ceiling\, still leave us breathless today. \nSpanning his 88 years\, Michelangelo: Love and Death take a cinematic journey through the print and drawing rooms of Europe through the great chapels and museums of Florence\, Rome\, and the Vatican to seek out a deeper understanding of this legendary figure’s tempestuous life\, his relationship with his contemporaries\, and his incredible legacy. \nThrough expert commentary\, stunning visuals\, and Michelangelo’s own words\, this film takes a fresh look at a master artist whose life and genius are celebrated in every mark he made. 2017\, U.K.\, DCP\, 90 minutes. SUMMARY:Carmichael's Community Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Carmichael’s Community Book Club\nEvent date:   Monday\, June 2\, 2025 – 7:00pm \n2720 Frankfort Avenue\nLouisville\, KY 40206 \nCome join us for the next meeting of the Carmichael’s Community Book Club. The club meets on the last Monday of the month. \n*Please note the date change for this meeting due to Memorial Day. \n\nMay’s pick is There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension by Hanif Abdurraqib \nAbout the Book:\nGrowing up in Columbus\, Ohio\, in the 1990s\, Hanif Abdurraqib witnessed a golden era of basketball\, one in which legends like LeBron James were forged and countless others weren’t. His lifelong love of the game leads Abdurraqib into a lyrical\, historical\, and emotionally rich exploration of what it means to make it\, who we think deserves success\, the tension between excellence and expectation\, and the very notion of role models\, all of which he expertly weaves together with intimate\, personal storytelling. “Here is where I would like to tell you about the form on my father’s jump shot\,” Abdurraqib writes. “The truth\, though\, is that I saw my father shoot a basketball only one time.” \nThere’s Always This Year is a triumph\, brimming with joy\, pain\, solidarity\, comfort\, outrage\, and hope. No matter the subject of his keen focus—whether it’s basketball\, or music\, or performance—Hanif Abdurraqib’s exquisite writing is always poetry\, always profound\, and always a clarion call to radically reimagine how we think about our culture\, our country\, and ourselves. \nGET THE BOOK / ADDITIONAL INFO

With a career that bridges both single malt and bourbon traditions\, Martin brings a globally informed\, boundary-pushing approach to whiskey making. After studying distilling in Edinburgh and honing his craft on both sides of the Atlantic\, he now leads production and innovation at Angel’s Envy—developing everything from their acclaimed Cellar Collection and Cask Strength series to bold\, experimental finishes. \nThis intimate evening will be held in our historic Stud Barn\, home to several of Hermitage Farm’s retired thoroughbred horses. Before and after the event\, guests are invited to meet the horses\, take photos\, and enjoy the unique charm of the setting. \nBut the centerpiece of the night is the whiskey.
