SUMMARY:"Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939" @ Speed Art Museum (multiple dates\, March 29-June 22)
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 29 – JUNE 22\, 2025\n3rd Floor\, North Building\nVenue Curator: Erika Holmquist-Wall \nBuy Tickets \nDuring the early twentieth century\, Paris was the destination of choice for talented and independent American women determined to move beyond the limitations that restricted them at home. Drawn by a strong desire for independence\, they crossed the Atlantic to pursue personal and professional ambitions in a city viewed as the epicenter of modernity. Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris\, 1900-1939 recaptures the experiences of these unorthodox women who found in Paris the freedom to blaze new trails in a variety of fields\, including art\, literature\, design\, publishing\, music\, fashion\, journalism\, theater\, and dance. As foreigners in a cosmopolitan city\, they escaped the societal expectations and constraints of both the United States and France. Many used their newfound liberty as an opportunity for self-reinvention and discovery. \nPortraiture provides a revealing lens through which to view the cultural shifts American women helped instigate in Paris. Their defiance of social\, professional\, and gender norms rendered conventional modes of female portraiture obsolete. Brilliant Exiles highlights the dynamic role of portraiture in articulating the refashioned sense of self and the new conceptions of modern female identity that resulted from the interventions of American women in Parisian life. \nDespite significant differences in their circumstances\, the women in this exhibition shared many experiences and points of contact. Featuring over 85 artworks across various media and accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue\, Brilliant Exiles visually graphs the social and creative networks and points of intersection that linked these various groups\, with an emphasis on sites of sociability and production that were overseen by women. Through vivid portraits and compelling biographies\, the catalogue and exhibition recover a history that will be unfamiliar to many museum visitors\, revealing the impact that American Women had on modernist Paris\, as well as the city’s transformative effect on these brilliant exiles from the United States. \n  \nThis exhibition has been organized by the National Portrait Gallery and received Federal support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative Pool\, administered by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum. \n  \n  \n***Description from website

SUMMARY:Juneteenth at Farmington | Free Tours and more | Buffalo Soldier experience/Cultural Pass
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Juneteenth Farmington is holding a full day of special programming with an emphasis on the enslaved individuals who lived and labored on this land. Free Tours of the House will be available all day along with other special presentations on the grounds. \nToday only- Buffalo Soldier Encampment reenactment demonstrating post-Civil War African American cavalry. \nCultural Pass & Senior Pass Participants can get their passes “stamped” today \n***description from website \n\nFREE TOURS all day on JUNETEENTH\nIn honor of Juneteenth Farmington is holding a day of special programming with an emphasis on the enslaved individuals who lived and labored on this land. Delve into the experiences of Farmington’s residents & guests (most notably Abraham Lincoln)\, exploring a unique KY history with national impact. \nFarmington was a 550-acre hemp plantation\, home to the John Speed family\, and at the time of his death\, we can document ~70 people enslaved at Farmington. Unfortunately\, we do not know the total number of individuals that were enslaved throughout the plantation’s occupation\, but we have been able to document aspects of the lives of several people. Learn about Morocco\, his sister Phillis and her daughter\, Diana\, who self-emancipated with two of her young children. Others such as Cato\, the hostler\, Rose-who sold fruits & dairy in Louisville’s market\, Rheuben\, Bartlett\, Buck\, & Henry who worked in the hemp fields. \nAbraham Lincoln visited his best friend Joshua Speed at Farmington for 3 weeks in 1841 – a visit which had a lifelong impact on him. He experienced the life of the plantation first hand and witnessed enslaved people being shipped South on riverboats on the Ohio River. He also spent a great deal of time with James Speed\, an emancipationist who became Lincoln’s Attorney General and had a lasting influence on Lincoln’s views during his presidency. \nToday ONLY– experience a Buffalo Soldier encampment reenactment demonstrating post-Civil War African American cavalry. We also have a new map activity which guides exploration of the outdoor stations on the grounds. Special Presenters will offer interactive activities. Have a picnic on the grounds\, see industrial hemp growing & visit the Pollinator Prairie. Master Gardeners will be available to speak about historical plantings. \nAdditional Details \nPark at the Visitor Center parking lot. \nCheck in at the Visitor Center for Cultural Pass & Senior Pass participants. \nChildren under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nAnticipate a minimum of 30 minutes to tour the home\, and additional time for grounds activities and demonstrations. \nThe Exhibit Room in the Visitor Center is open all day\, house and grounds tours are self-guided. Guides will be stationed throughout the house to answer questions. \nThe house closes 30 minutes after the last check in time. \nPaved walkways connect the Visitor Center\, the house museum\, and historic gardens. \nThe house is not wheelchair accessible. The house is accessed via stairway\, and there are interior staircases\, along with woven carpeting. \nBuilding interiors are climate controlled. \nYou may picnic on the grounds but no food or drink is allowed in the House Museum. \n***description from website \n\nWe wish to acknowledge that this area of Kentucky\, including the Farmington property\, was at one time occupied by the indigenous people that lived in the Ohio Valley region\, namely the Iroquois\, Shawnee\, and Osage tribes. \nFarmington is also one of many farms in the Louisville area where slavery existed in the years before the Civil War. From 1809 to 1865 Farmington was home to the Speed family as well as enslaved men and women. \nFarmington strives to tell the story of all people who lived and worked on this land and at Farmington through preservation and education. \nFarmington asks guests using the property to respect the memories and lives of all who came before us.
