December 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Louisville Chorus sings Christmas “In Every Tongue” at the Cathedral of the Assumption Dec. 18 and St. Brigid Dec. 20

The Louisville Chorus’ “Canticles of Christmas,” presented by Tony Walker Financial, returns this December with two performances.

The first is by candlelight at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, in one of our city’s finest spaces for choral sound: the nineteenth-century nave of the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St.

The second is a matinee performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 1520 Hepburn Ave. in the historical Original Highlands.

Tickets

Tickets for the Cathedral performance range from $12.24 to $33.65, and tickets for the St. Brigid performance range from $22.94 to $33.65 (all fees included).

A string orchestra and soprano soloist Christina Booker will join the Louisville Chorus for the “Christmas Canticles” concert which celebrates the Chorus’ 87th season theme, “In Every Tongue,” through season-inspired music from around the globe. The program includes songs in English, Russian, Latin, German, Scottish Gaelic, Southern Sámi, Norwegian, Spanish, and Hebrew.

Familiar favorites fill out the program, including the “Wexford Carol,” the Hungarian carol “Angels in Heaven,” “Stille Nacht,” “Joyeux Noël,” “Feliz Navidad,” and Adolphe Adam’s “O Holy Night.”

“Every culture that has celebrated Christmas has sung about it in its own language, and most audiences only ever hear a few of them,” said Dr. David Borman, artistic director of the Louisville Chorus. “This program lets people hear the same story told in Russian, in Gaelic, in Sámi, in Spanish, all in one room. And with strings and Christina Booker’s voice in a space like the Cathedral, it becomes the most beautiful thing we do all year.”

Booker is a Louisville-based soprano and voice educator on the faculties of Bellarmine and Indiana University SE. Founder of CLB Voice Studio, she holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and has appeared as a soloist in Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Requiem, and Vivaldi’s Gloria at the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica. She was also a guest artist on Kentucky Opera’s educational tour of Oh! Freedom!

About the Louisville Chorus | LouisvilleChorus.org

The Louisville Chorus is Kentucky’s longest continuously performing choral organization. Founded in 1939 as the Holy Name Choral Club, it became non-denominational in 1972 and took its present name in 1987. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit is led by Artistic Dir. Dr. David Borman and Executive Dir. Jenna Preston. The Chorus and its chamber ensemble, the Fleur de Lis Singers, perform in sacred and secular venues across the region, with programs ranging from classical masterworks to popular and holiday programs. Several concerts each year are free, and through the Chorus’ Everywhere We Go initiative, a number of seats at ticketed concerts are priced by the buyer.
